(USB Network to WiFi)

If there’s one developer that’s synonymous with jailbreaking, it has to be Intelliborn. Around since the early days of jailbreaking, Intelliborn is who we should thank for some of the best jailbreak tweaks around, and certainly some of the tweaks that we install as soon as we jailbreak a new iPhone or iPad.

One of the tweaks that Intelliborn is best known for is MyWi. Originally launched as a way to tether devices to an iPhone before tethering was officially built into iOS by Apple, MyWi has since grown into more than a simple tweak for allowing people to tether, and while some may have expected it to wither following Apple’s inclusion of tethering into iOS itself it is still one of the tweaks that people look out for when a new jailbreak becomes available.

When Evad3rs launched its Evasi0n iOS 7 jailbreak last week, Intelliborn was also there to launch its iOS 7-compatible MyWi 7, making sure that those who rely on its tweak would be able to continue doing so once they made the jump to Apple’s latest and greatest version of iOS. As if compatibility wasn’t enough though, Intelliborn has now released an update that brings us to version 7.01.01.

Pushed out a few hours ago, this new version of MyWi adds support for 5GHz Wi-Fi tethering on devices that support it. Those devices include the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and quite a few iPads. With 5GHz support users should be able to create tethering bubbles with less interference, hopefully giving them more speed to play with in the process.

As is usually the case, Intelliborn is offering this update as a free one to existing MyWi owners, and in fact MyWi 7 is a free update to those that currently have a MyWi 6 license too. People upgrading from versions 4 or 5 will need to pay a $4.99 fee, and those with no prior MyWi license can get in on the action for $19.99. There’s a 3-day trial that can be used should you need to kick the tires on MyWi before handing over your money, too.

As always, MyWi can be installed via Cydia, with a huge range of iOS devices supported.

MyWi 6.0 FAQs

Why can’t I see the MyWi 6.0 hotspot on my iPhone 5?

The iPhone 5 introduced support for the 5ghz band. If your laptop doesn’t support 5ghz, it’s possible MyWi is broadcasting in 5ghz. If you are associated with a WiFi access point, try disconnecting wifi and then start MyWi.

Note:
MyWi 6.0 defaults to 2.4 ghz unless it’s already connected to a 5ghz WiFi AP. If it is already connected, in order to prevent that disconnection, it broadcasts at 5ghz.

Will MyWi work without a 3G connection?

In some limited ways yes, but likely not in the way you are hoping to.

If you have a 3G connection, MyWi will create a hotspot for your other devices or a client ondemand connection if you have MyWi OnDemand.

If you do not have a 3G connection, you can bridge an internet WiFi connection to other devices. Please do not confuse this with magically creating an internet connection. It won’t. 🙂

Can MyWi work with the Wii?

I’m having problems with WiFi Tethering. What should I do?

We have redesigned MyWi 5.0 to be 99%+ successful. If you are using MyWi, please upgrade to MyWi 4.0.

If you’re using MyWi 5.0 — here are some basic troubleshooting steps:

  1. Try rebooting your iDevice (we know — it’s not Windows but sometimes a reboot helps)
  2. Turn off WEP. Believe it or not, many folks mistype the key either on the WiFi tethering side or the client side.
  3. Try another type of laptop/device to connect to the WiFi Hotspot. Some devices don’t support Adhoc Networking, some drivers don’t work correctly. This will help troubleshoot if it’s the one device or something else. For WiFi from Windows please make sure that your computer supports connecting to an Ad-Hoc network. Some Windows 7 users have had to go into the properties for their Wireless NIC (in Device Manager) and enable Ad-Hoc support and/or upgrade their NIC driver.
  4. Make sure you have uninstalled any other tethering solution. Some apps, like PDANet will run a background service all the time which will prevent another DHCP server from running (which prevents MyWi 5.0 from correctly assigning you an IP Address).

If these steps didn’t help, here are some advanced troubleshooting steps:

  1. If you can connect to the WiFi hotspot you created, but can’t connect to the internet:
    1. Again — remove WEP and change the name of the WiFi Hotspot SSID on your iDevice and restart the WiFi tethering. Check the devices WiFi Network settings and see if you have obtained an IP address and a DNS server entry. If not, please send us a Syslog so we can help troubleshoot.
  2. If you can’t start the WiFi Hotspot, try again. If it continues to not start, and you have rebooted, it might be easiest to restore your iDevice. We have 100% success rate for users that restore which indicates that they have installed something else on their iDevice which is conflicting. Again, this can be apps like PDANet or others.

Lastly — please do not use a cracked version. A reasonably large percentage of folks having problems have a cracked version which does not work. The cracked versions make the App say it’s purchased, but the real part of MyWi knows that your trial is expired.

I already paid for MyWi — Why does it tell me to pay again for MyWi 6.0?

MyWi 4.0 is a complete rewrite due to complexities involved with iOS 4 on Apple’s behalf. We hope you understand that our efforts to create MyWi 4.0 were many more times than that of the original. Other Intelliborn products such as IntelliScreen, Elert, My3G, IntelliDial and Tlert have been released as free updates given the more simplistic nature of the work required to make them function on 4.0.

In Cydia, you should be able to login with your existing RockID that you used to purchase MyWi and receive the discounted upgrade price to MyWi 4 ($9.99 US) by clicking on «Associate RockID» inside the description within Cydia. The full purchase price of MyWi 4.0 is $19.99 US.

Do I have to pay for tethering with my carrier if I use MyWi/MyWi 6.0?

Can I USB tether and WiFi tether at the same time?

Note: If you are using USB to WiFi tethering and turn on WiFi Tethering, your USB traffic will go through 3G (of course).

Does MyWi 6.0 support Bluetooth Tethering?

1.7mbps) where WiFi max is

65mbs. Of course, true speed depends on your 3G/LTE connection speed.

Is MyWi 6.0 or My3G a one time fee or monthy?

None of our apps are monthly. All minor upgrades are free.

On occasion, with new features/enhancements, we release a new name for an existing product, (such as MyWi 6.0 for MyWi). This is after significant investment by us on the development of the product. You may choose to keep your old license or upgrade to the new product.

We can not guarantee future compatibility support/upgrade support but try our best!

What’s the difference between Status Bar Icon and Tethering Bar?

What does USB to WiFi bridging mean?

Can MyWi 6.0 create an Infrastructure network instead of Ad-Hoc?

Can MyWi 6.0 work with PS3, PSP, or Kindle?

Yes — on iPhone 4/5 with iOS 4.2.6+, MyWi 6.0 can create an infrastructure mode network.

For other iDevices, — no. The WiFi firmware only supports adhoc network creation. The PSP, PS3, and Kindle devices do not support connecting to an Ad-Hoc network.

MyWi: The Best Way To Tether With An iOS Device [iOS, Cydia]

Many cell phone carriers offer the ability to tether, but some don’t, and many of the ones that do charge insane amounts per month to have the service available on the device. Sharing your Internet connection with another device is incredibly useful and can be a real lifesaver if you need to get some work done on your laptop and you happen to find yourself somewhere without a Wi-Fi connection. If your carrier does not offer tethering, and your iPhone is jailbroken, there is a way to get tethering on your device without a monthly charge.

MyWi is one of the best ways to get tethering on your iPhone. It is easy to use, and offers all the features you could ever want for tethering on your device. It makes the process of sharing your Internet connection so easy, that even individuals with minimal tech skills can make it happen. Is it the cheapest tweak on Cydia? Certainly not, but when you compare it to the cost of a monthly tethering plan to the one-time purchase price of MyWi, it becomes much more reasonable.

If your carrier offers tethering, and you opt to go around those plans using MyWi, there is a good chance that they will add a tethering plan to your account if they catch you using MyWi. Keep that in mind before you decide whether purchasing this app is for you.

To install MyWi, simply search Cydia for, you guessed it, “MyWi.” Make sure to download the one called “MyWi 5,” as MyWi 4 is the outdated version for iOS 4. If you are still running iOS 4, the old one will work, but many of the features I will talk about today will not be there. The app costs $20, but you can grab a trial of the app to see if you like it before you drop the money for a license.

MyWi offers four different ways to tether on your iPhone. The first of these is through Wi-Fi, which turns your iPhone into a mobile hotspot. When this is enabled, laptops and other devices with a Wi-Fi connection can see your iPhone and connect to it just like it was a router in your home. All you need to do is enable this option from the app, and choose whether you want it to be password-protected or open (I highly recommend password protecting it, as anyone can connect if they are within range).

You can also tether through USB. Just like Wi-Fi, you simply enable it, and plug your phone into your computer. This is the best way to tether if you only need to connect one device at a time. You do not need to worry about unauthorized people connecting, and it keeps your phone charged as you are sharing the Internet connection.

MyWi also offers tethering over Bluetooth. Obviously, the device you are sharing with must be compatible with Bluetooth in order for this to work. You simply pair your iPhone and other Bluetooth device, turn on Bluetooth, and you will be on the Internet.

The last type of tethering is really awesome. It’s called MyWi OnDemand. This is designed specifically for pairing your iPhone and iPad. Whenever your iPad wants to connect, it automatically opens the connection with your iPhone and shares the Internet. This means you don’t have to go into the app and turn on sharing every single time you want your iPad to have Internet. This is not included in the base app, and requires an additional $5.00 purchase.

MyWi also has some other cool features. Here’s some examples of some other cool stuff MyWi does:

  • Share a Wi-Fi connection instead of cellular data.
  • Tells you how much data you have sent and received while tethering.
  • Shows number of connected devices.
  • Supports WPA2 and WEP security.
  • Shows the rate of battery drain (tethering uses a ton of battery).

For ease of use and amount of features, it does not get better than MyWi. It has all the options you need for sharing your phone’s Internet with other devices, and it does it in a slick package that anyone can pick up and use without needing to learn the ins and outs of network sharing. It’s so good, it feels like it’s built right into the iPhone’s OS.
